Is it possible to rebuild your own credit? If you have a poor credit score or bad credit history, what can you do to repair it? The good news is that there are steps you can by yourself to improve bad credit. However, it’s important to remember that repairing bad credit takes time. Complete credit rehabilitation cannot be done overnight.

How long will it take for you to get out of bad credit? The length of time it will take to repair bad credit depends on the situation. Needless to say, if you currently have a credit score way below average, you might need a little more time to work for improvement. It can take anywhere from six months to a year or a few years to achieve an excellent status, depending on the steps you take to improve your credit.

The earlier you start rebuilding bad credit, the sooner you can regain good credit as well. So, don’t feel disheartened if your current credit is not perfect. Check out these tips on how you can repair your personal credit for free.

Evaluate your credit report. All consumers are entitled to receive one free credit report each year from the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). You can request for your free report at www.annualcreditreport.com. It’s a good idea to get your annual free report at the start of 2012, especially if you need to repair your personal credit.

Clean up errors. By checking your credit report, you will be able to see whether all the information and charges in your report are correct. Take note that errors can badly pull down your credit score. You can instantly improve your score by a few significant points by correcting these errors.

Send a credit dispute letter to the bureau that issued your report via registered post mail. In your letter, point out the exact items in your report that needs to be correct. You should also enclose photocopies of documents that support your claim and a photocopy of the report with the errors clearly marked.

This process can take up to 30 days. From the date of receipt of your letter, the bureau will conduct an investigation and if your dispute is valid, the necessary corrections will be applied and the bureau will send you an updated copy of your report.

Speak with your creditors. Some people think that they always need the help of a debt consolidation company to negotiate their debts. However, you can personally speak with your creditor to negotiate a new repayment term that will work for you.

Before approaching a creditor, carefully assess your situation and create a repayment plan. Explain to your creditor the reason why you are struggling with repayment and request if your current repayment terms can be modified. You can even ask a creditor to lower your interest rate or waive the penalty fees to make it easier for you to catch up with repayment. Most creditors are willing to modify their terms if they can see your willingness to stand by your obligations.

Seek free counseling. You can acquire professional advice from a non-profit credit counseling organization accredited by the government. Check out the NFCC’s (National Foundation for Credit Counseling) website for a list of agencies that offer free credit counseling service.

Come 2012, many people will still need to repair their personal credit and dig themselves out of debt. If you find yourself in the same situation, don’t feel disheartened. You make an effort to repair bad credit and most of the steps that you can do are not complicated at all. Consider these tips:

1. Check your report. The first step is to check your personal credit report. Order copies of your annual credit report from the three major credit bureaus so you can evaluate the status of all your accounts. All consumers are entitled to receive one free report each year from www.annualcreditreport.com.

Are all the charges in your credit report correct? If you find errors or incorrect charges, you should send a credit dispute letter to the bureau that issued your report. Cleaning up errors from your credit report can take up to 30 days since the bureau will conduct its own investigation. If your dispute is valid, the errors will be corrected and the bureau will send an updated copy of your report for free. This step alone can boost your current low credit score by a few points.

2. Pay your creditors on time. Start the year right by paying all your monthly dues on time. If you seriously want to improve bad credit, you cannot afford to miss a single due date. What if you are confronted with an exceptionally large amount of debt?

If paying off all your debts at once is not possible, you must prioritize your debts and focus on paying off balances on one account at a time. Which of your account has the highest rate of interest? By paying off this account first, you can prevent your debts from quickly accumulating.

3. Negotiate your debts. You should also try to negotiate or speak with each of your creditors. Explain to a creditor your present financial situation. Some people might feel embarrassed to admit that they are experiencing financial crisis.

However, if creditors can see that you are willing to stand by your obligations despite the circumstances, they will be most likely to show consideration. Many creditors have made changes to their terms and conditions to help a borrower get out of debt.

4. Create a suitable repayment plan. It’s important to have a repayment strategy that is suitable to your situation. Sum up your total debts and compare it with your monthly income. On 2012, your primary task is debt repayment so you need to work out a budget that will help you achieve that goal more easily.

If you’re stuck in bad debt, the situation may demand that you make major changes with your spending habits and lifestyle, so be prepared. Keep in mind that despite the hardships that you may encounter, you will be able to enjoy a stress-free life once you free yourself from bad debt.

5. Seek professional counseling. It will also help if you can get advice from the experts. You can check out the NFCC (national Foundation for Credit Counseling) and the US Department of Justice’s (http://www.justice.gov/ust/eo/bapcpa/ccde/cc_approved.htm) website for a list of approved credit counseling agencies and non-profit credit counseling organizations in your region.

Filing for bankruptcy can sometimes be the only practical solution to debt problem. However, in many instances, you can take other solutions to recover from debt and bad credit.

When confronted with a serious debt problem and financial crisis, a person or a business owner may consider filing for bankruptcy. This option gives a debtor the chance to be discharged from all debts through Chapter 7 Bankruptcy.

However, not everyone who files for bankruptcy can qualify for a Chapter 7 Bankruptcy. If the bankruptcy court finds that the debtor is capable of repayment, he/she will be subjected to a five-year repayment plan where a percentage of the monthly salary will be automatically paid to creditors. This is known as Chapter 13 Bankruptcy.

Chapter 7 and Chapter 13 are just the two basic types of bankruptcies but there are other forms as well. It’s important to understand that not all debts can be discharged through bankruptcy. Examples of these debts include alimony, most student loans, and tax liens. It is the bankruptcy court that decides which type of bankruptcy is best appropriate for the applicant’s financial situation.

Under the new bankruptcy law, an applicant must go through the “median income means” test in order to determine if he/she is eligible for a Chapter 7 bankruptcy. If your monthly income shows that you are capable for debt repayment, after all necessary expenses have been deducted, you will be subjected to a Chapter 13 Bankruptcy.

How to Avoid Bankruptcy

Filing for bankruptcy can sometimes be the only practical solution to debt problem. However, in many instances, you can take other solutions to recover from debt and bad credit. Keep in mind that a record of bankruptcy will remain in your personal credit reports for seven years. Once your debts have been discharged through bankruptcy, all past credit history you built will be erased.

The consequences of having a bankruptcy record in your credit history can be serious. It can be more difficult to get approved for new credit since creditors may regard you as a high risk customer. This is why borrowers need to carefully consider the matter, before deciding whether filing for bankruptcy is suitable.

Of course, the best way to avoid bankruptcy is to avoid bad debt. As the popular adage goes, an ounce of prevention is better than a pound of cure. If you own a credit card or credit cards, you should be aware of the risks if you fail to manage your spending. It is crucial to pay off your debts on time to avoid build-up.

If you can keep your debts as minimal as possible, you can greatly minimize the risk of bad debt and bankruptcy. Be aware of your duties and responsibilities as a borrower. Once you acquired credit, you should comply by the terms and conditions of your lender.

Indeed, effective money management is the key to avoid bankruptcy. Live within your means and recognize the value of hard-earned money. Before acquiring a loan or a credit card, weigh the pros and cons before you make a decision. And if you really need to obtain a loan or a new credit card, shop around first to find the best deal.

Do you own a credit card? If yes, this article present tips on how to manage credit card debt more effectively. Considering these suggestions can help you get the most out of your credit card and avoid the risk of bad credit.

Pay off your balance. There really is no good reason to carry a balance in your account. Carrying a balance from month to month will not help you get a better credit score. On the contrary, the risk of debt build-up is increased each time you leave your charges unpaid. The best way to use a credit card is to pay the monthly balance in full so you can completely avoid interest rate charges.

Pay more than the monthly minimum. Credit cardholders can pay only the monthly minimum required by their issuer. However, charges can quickly accumulate if you choose to leave them unpaid. If you cannot pay your full balance, you should pay off as much as you can from your charges.

Do not max out your credit limit. Be careful not to use your credit limit to the full. This can be avoided by checking your balance first before going out to shop with your credit card and by planning your purchases in advance.

Even if your credit card offers a low rate, you should still keep your charges minimal. Why is this important? 30% of your credit score is based on credit utilization. If you have a high credit-to-debt ratio, your credit score can badly drop. According to financial experts, cardholders should avoid using more than 30% of their available limit.

Simplify your life.If you have been used to extravagant spending, confident that you can always count on your credit cards, perhaps it’s about time to take an objective look on your financial situation. Are you able to pay your credit card balances in full and on time? Or are you struggling to keep up with repayment? If you’re having a hard time catching up with your debts, perhaps you need to make some adjustments or charges.

Review the fine print. If you are still in searching for a credit card, take the time to read the fine print. The only way you can compare credit cards accurately is to understand the complete Terms and Conditions. Even if you’ve had your credit card for years, you should still review the Terms and Conditions from time to time.

There might have been some changes on the terms or the interest rate might have increased, and the only way you can be alerted is if you read notices sent by your issuer. According the new Credit CARD Law, credit card companies should give their customers a 45-day advanced noticed before implementing changes.

Don’t get more cards than you can handle. It can be tempting sometimes to sign up for a new credit card even if you already have one. However, it’s best to stick with just one or two credit cards since managing multiple accounts can prove to be difficult. Don’t apply for a new credit card unless you really need to.

Do you have bad credit? If so, then it’s about time to do something about it. You’ll be glad to know that there are positive steps you can do to get yourself out of bad credit. Consider these practical credit repair suggestions.

When your personal credit is not in perfect shape, it can be a bit disappointing. However, instead of being disheartened, you should be motivated even more to take positive action. Why should you be interested in repairing your personal credit history and credit score?

Good credit can be a great advantage when it comes to matters of finances. If you have good credit, more doors of opportunities will be opened to you. On the other hand, if you have bad credit, your options to finding a good deal can be limited.

It is no secret that bankers and creditors prefer customers with impressive credit over customers who are credit challenged. If you have a low score, a creditor may consider you as a high risk borrower, and might even refuse to grant approval. Many lending companies and financial organizations have strict credit standards and if you’re looking for a great deal, you should only work with the best lenders in the market.

Aside from getting your credit application quickly approved, having good credit strengthens your negotiating power. A potential lender is more likely to give a lower interest rate or give you a flexible repayment term if you are regarded as a credit worthy borrower.

Do you have bad credit? If so, then it’s about time to do something about it. You’ll be glad to know that there are positive steps you can do to get yourself out of bad credit. Consider these practical credit repair suggestions:

Check your personal report. You can obtain a free copy of your annual credit report, issued by the three major credit bureaus from www.annualcreditreport.com. Consumers are entitled to a free report annually so if you have not yet receive your free report this year, then you should definitely take advantage of this privilege.

Credit report errors can be fixed. You should know that errors in your credit report can be corrected if you will send a credit dispute letter to the bureau that issued your report. Furthermore, outdated information such a record of bankruptcy or foreclosure older than seven years should be erased from your report. By getting these errors fixed, you can make a big improvement with your current credit rating.

Pay all your bills on time. Be sure to submit all your payments on time as even one late payment can pull down your score even more. Do you have past due debts? If yes, do your best to pay them off quickly. If you’re having trouble paying off your debts at once, consider the next credit repair step.

Negotiate your debts. You should not hesitate speaking with your creditor about your debts. Instead ignoring the bills and letting your debt pile up due to the monthly interest rate charges and late fees, you should work out a new repayment arrangement with your creditor. Most creditors would be glad to modify their terms especially if the borrower is experiencing financial crisis due to circumstances beyond his/her control.

Seek professional credit repair help. Finally, you may also consider getting advice from a trusted credit counseling agency nearest to you. Check out the NFCC (National Foundation for Credit Counseling) for a list of credit repair agencies that offer services for free or at a small charge.

Checking your credit report is an important step to ensure that your account activities are accurately reported. There are three major main credit bureaus that collect credit information for consumers –Experian, Equifax, TransUnion. Each bureau operates independently and this is why it’s important to check your report from all three sources.

The bureaus gather financial information from banks, creditors, lending companies, and financial organizations. However, take note that not all creditors report to the bureaus. If you will take out a loan from a lender that does not report your payments to a credit bureau, your activities will not be included in your credit report. It’s important to make sure that your chosen lender reports to a major credit bureau to build credit history and credit score.

Consumers are entitled to receive their annual credit report for free as stated in the Fair and Accurate Credit Transactions Act (FACTA). But where can you get your free report? You can request for your free report by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com. Take note that this is the only resource authorized by the government to offer free consumers credit reports.

Annualcreditreport.com is a website created by the three major credit bureaus where consumers can request for their annual free report. You can request for all three copies of your credit reports at once, or get one copy from each bureau at different times of the year.

Watch out for other sources that offer free online credit reports. They may advertise free credit report and credit score but once you sign up, you may discover that you are required to pay for another service they offer for you to get your free report. You should also watch out against scammers who may set up fake websites that offer free online credit reports to steal information.

Other Ways to Access Free Credit Report

There are instances when you can access your credit report from the three major credit bureaus for free. For instance, if you have been denied credit within the last 60 days because of your personal credit history or if you suspect to be a victim of identity theft, you can get your free report straight from the credit bureaus. If you are presently unemployed and plan to look for work within the next 60 days, you are also entitled to a free report.

What if you want to check your report prior to submitting your loan application or credit card application? In this case, you can order a copy of your report from the three bureaus at a fee of $9 to $12, depending on the bureau.

Carefully check your report to make sure there are no errors. In case you discover incorrect items or unauthorized charges, you should send a letter to the bureau that issued your report immediately so your file can be updated. Keep in mind that erroneous information can pull down your credit score so it’s important to have those mistakes removed.

When it comes to issues that involve your personal credit, consumers have the right to dispute errors as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Disputes are usually done by sending credit repair letters. On this post, let us take a look at the different types of credit-related dispute letters that you can send, depending on the situation.

Credit Dispute Letter

If you ordered a copy of your latest annual credit report from a credit reporting agency and you notice errors or unauthorized charges in one of your accounts, you should immediately send a credit dispute letter to the bureau that issued your report.

Upon receiving your dispute letter, the credit bureau must begin an investigation right away. If your dispute if found valid, the necessary corrections will be made in your credit reports and the bureau will notify the other two credit bureaus about the updates made in your file. You will also receive an updated copy of your report for free. The process can take up to 30 days after your letter has been received.

Follow-up Credit Dispute Letter

After sending your credit dispute letter to a credit bureau, you should receive a response from the bureau after 15 days, informing you that an investigation has already been started. However, if you do not hear anything from the credit bureau within 15 days, you should send a follow-up credit dispute letter to make sure that your complaint will be given attention.

Remind the credit bureau of its mandate to act accordingly to all consumer disputes as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Don’t forget to enclose a copy of your original dispute letter in your follow-up letter.

Cease and Desist Letter

If your account has been passed on to a debt collection agency, the agency will notify you regarding your debts. You can request the debt collection agency to stop contacting you about your debts. However, sending a Cease and Desist letter does not change the fact that you have debts to pay. The purpose of sending this letter is to save you from the stress and pressure of dealing with constant debt collection. Needless to say, it is sill your moral obligation to pay your debts.

Dispute Or Debt Validation Letter

When a debt collection agency contacts you about your debts, you should send a validation letter right away. In your letter, ask the agency to provide you with a written and detailed report of your debts. This is important to be sure that you are not being made to pay debts that are not yours.

On Sending Credit Repair Letters

Always send your letter via registered mail so you can have proof that you sent such letter. First Class Mailing will also ensure that your credit repair letter will reach the intended recipient and not get lost along the way.

When writing credit-related letters, be professional. Keep your letter short, clear, and straightforward. Do not include irrelevant details. Last but not least, proofread your letter before printing and sending.

A lot of people are looking for professional credit repair services. However, not all companies and agencies that offer credit help are legitimate or can be trusted. This is why it’s important to understand how credit repair companies work so you can avoid being a victim of fraud and rip-offs.

How Do Credit Repair Companies Work

A legitimate credit repair company can give financial counseling and education to people who are in the middle of bad credit. By evaluating the individual’s financial situation, a credit counsellor will be able to give specific advices to help a person recover from bad debt or improve bad credit.

How long does it take to repair bad credit? In reality, repairing bad credit takes time. You may need to work on the improvement of your credit score for at least a year before you can regain a good credit standing. Sometimes, rebuilding credit can take more than a year or a few years, depending on how bad the damage is.

Watch out for credit repair agencies that promise instant fix of your credit score. There is no way any person or agency can remove records of debts, bankruptcy, tax liens or judgments from your credit reports unless the information is incorrect.

If an agency claims that it can fix your bad credit without effort on your part, you are surely dealing with a fraudulent company. If a counselor advices you to change your identity by using an Employer Identification Number in place of your Social Security Number, it is a clear sign that you are dealing with a fraudulent agency. A legitimate and trusted debt relief service would never resort to illegal or deceptive tactics to rebuild bad credit.

Bad Credit Solutions

Some counsellors who work for credit repair agencies earn commissions based on the number of people who sign up for the agency’s Debt Management Program or DMP. Consumers must avoid seeking help from such agencies because the counsellors may be tempted to convince their clients to sign up for a DMP even when other solutions are available.

Before advising a client to get a Debt Consolidation loan, a trusted credit counselor should give practical suggestions on how you can recover from bad credit. For instance, a counselor can help you devise a debt repayment plan that fits your financial capability and situation. You may also be given tips on how you can save more money and stretch your budget to avoid incurring new debts.

It is also your right to look into your credit report. In fact, you don’t need to go to a credit counseling agency to check your personal report. You can order your free annual credit report from www.annualcreditreport.com so you can be sure that all information in your file is accurate. False details and outdated remarks can badly hurt your credit rating.

Keep in mind that it is your right to dispute credit report errors as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act. Cleaning up errors in your report can significantly boost your score as you continue to improve your credit history.

If you have a problem with your personal credit, you’ll be glad to know that you can repair it and you can do it on your own. In this article, we present all the steps that you can do by yourself to improve a low credit score or repair a bad credit history.

Check your credit report. The first step in rebuilding bad credit is credit report check. Order a copy of your report from the three major credit bureaus (Experian, Equifax, TransUnion). Have you received your free report for this year? If you haven’t yet, you can order your annual free report from www.annualcreditreport.com. On the other hand, you can also order straight from each of the three bureaus for a fee of $9 to $12 per report.

Dispute errors. Examine your report to see if it contains any error. Remember that errors can be corrected by sending a credit dispute letter to the bureau that issued your report. Your letter should clearly point out the items in your report that needs to be corrected. Send your letter via registered post mail with photocopies of supporting documents if applicable. Upon receiving your letter, the bureau will conduct an investigation regarding your dispute which can go up to 30 days. If your complaint is valid, the bureau will send you an updated copy of your credit report for free. It will also contact the two other bureaus about the updates made in your file.

Evaluate your debt. If you did not find any error, use your credit reports to assess your situation. Some people are not truly aware of how bad the problem is until they check their report. Sometimes, the problem may not be as bad as you think. Regardless of how serious the debt problem is, keep in mind that if you take action now, you can get yourself out of bad credit one step at a time.

Prioritize your debts. You may not have sufficient cash to pay all your creditors at once but this should not prevent you from taking charge of the situation. Check which of your accounts have high interest rates. High rate debts should be paid off as soon as possible to prevent your debts from building up quickly. If you see accounts with only a small amount of debt, you may consider paying it in full so you can eliminate some accounts from your obligations.

Create a debt repayment strategy. An effective debt repayment strategy should be realistic. You may need to make adjustments in your monthly spending in order to make more room for the payment of your debts. Don’t try to solve the problem in a hurry. Rather, you should focus on eliminating your debts one sure step at a time.

Avoid new debts. You need to focus on debt repayment and it can take a while before you can be free from debts completely. Thus, it’s only wise to avoid incurring new debts which can make repayment more difficult. If you own credit cards, use them only for minimal purchases that you can pay in full to prevent your account from automatically closing.

Correcting errors in your credit report should not be a complicated task. However, you do need to know the correct steps so you can get the results your after. Keep in mind that all consumers have the right to dispute errors in their credit reports as stated in the Fair Credit Reporting Act (FCRA). Furthermore, the three major credit bureaus are mandated by the Federal Law to respond to consumer disputes. On this post, we present the step-by-step procedure on how you can correct wrong details in your credit report:

Claim your free annual report. According to the FCRA, all consumers are entitled to receive one free report from each of the three credit reporting agencies (Equifax, Experian, and TransUnion). You can request for your free annual credit report by visiting www.annualcreditreport.com – the only resource authorized by the government to distribute free credit reports to consumers.

If you have already received your free report for this year, you can still order copies of your credit report directly from the three major credit bureaus for a fee of $9 to $12. It is recommended that you check your personal credit report at least twice a year to make sure that all information it contains are accurate.

Check your report for errors. As soon as you receive a copy of your report, check each of your accounts to make sure that all charges are correct. See to it that all your past payments have been accurately reported. In case you notice unfamiliar charges in any of your accounts, you should dispute them by sending a letter to the bureau that issued your report.

What other information can be corrected? Don’t forget to check your personal details to make sure that the spelling of your name is correct. See to it that all the details under the Personal Section category are correct. You should also keep an eye on any outdated information that still appears in your report. For example, if you have a record of bankruptcy or foreclosure that happened seven years ago, you should request the bureau to remove such negative remarks from your report.

Send a letter of dispute. If you discover errors in more than one account, you should send a separate credit dispute letter for each account to make sure that all your complaints will be given attention. A letter of dispute need not be lengthy. You do not need to include an elaborate explanation as to why you think the items are incorrect. The most important thing is to point out the items than need to be corrected.

Enclose a photocopy of your credit report with the errors encircled or marked. You should also enclose copies of documents or receipts that support your claim, especially when disputing paid charges that still appear as unpaid in your credit report. Make sure that you enclose photocopies, not the originals of the documents. Send your dispute letter via registered post mail to make sure that it will reach the credit bureau.

After sending your letter, you may need to wait up to 30 days before the investigation is completed. In case you do not receive any response from the bureau, be prepared to send a follow up dispute letter with your original dispute letter enclosed.
